Gardena, Los Angeles County
Japanese farmers began growing strawberries around Gardena in the early 1900s, and the town was once nicknamed Berryland. The community they founded is still one of the largest Japanese American populations in the South Bay, with a cultural institute, a Buddhist temple that holds an Obon festival each summer, and markets and restaurants along Western Avenue.
